The Ultimate Sunday Brunch at Home: The COVID-19 Edition
The good, old picnic
You may not be able to head over to your favourite restaurant for a typical Sunday brunch, but we think this is the next best thing: a backyard picnic.
Gather a heap of your favourite nibbles (and maybe a drop of vino), prep your basket as if you were heading out, spread your blanket on the lawn and jump into it. Set the scene with an ‘80s playlist in the background, and you’re good to go.
A book lover’s delight
Who said brunch had to be about hosting an entertaining with a buffet of food? Consider hosting a virtual book club via Facebook Live, Zoom, or Google Meets if you like a good read.
Invite your friends and family (who also share the interest, obviously) and dive into a literary world that’s free from lockdowns. Don’t forget a cup of hot chocolate or delicious tea.
Movies with the family
Nothing beats Netflix, and chill with the family. Pick a flick, roll down those blinds, and get all the brunch dishes going and settle in for a COVID-safe Sunday.
Live alone? Use Netflix Party to watch films with your friends or family over the internet.
Support small business
While times are tough, support local cafes and restaurants in your area offering food delivery through apps like Uber, Menulog or Door Dash. This means you can have all of your favourite brunch foods while still maintaining social distancing.
Boardgame breakfast
If you’re more of an early riser than a brunch-eater, set up your favourite board game at the dining room table and nibble away on pancakes while going head-to-head with those in your home. Again, if you live alone, there are plenty of virtual alternatives you can download instead.
The Aussie way: BBQs
This wouldn’t be a list of food and entertaining without the mention of the classic BBQ. While not necessarily a brunch staple, nothing beats a sunny Sunday behind the barbie, complete with a beverage in hand.
If you’re still planning on going down the brunch route, you can create grilled BBQ breakfast pizzas or crowd-favourite sausages, bacon and egg – get creative!
Brunch may look different to the pre-pandemic brunch we once knew, but there’s still plenty of ways to enjoy this weekend favourite.
