The Top Home Renovation Trends of 2021

Home Renovation Ideas

Throughout 2020 and 2021, a majority of us were left to our own devices at home, with not a lot of indication on when we’d be able to explore the Great Outdoors again. Because of this change in our everyday living, we naturally found ourselves looking for ways to refresh our spaces and enjoy some DIY renovations.

During the COVID-19 crisis, many homeowners experienced pain points in multiple areas of their lifestyles. Being quarantined has prompted many to find new ways to work, rest, entertain themselves, and create more “personal space” at home. So naturally, we’re rounding up some of the biggest home renovation trends of 2021, just in time for the New Year.

How many of these home renovation trends did you jump on?

Multi-purpose kitchens

Major renovations of the kitchen are expensive but they were on the rise throughout 2020 and 2021. In fact, reworking this area of the home was the most popular project of all, with the average spend increasing significantly when it came to kitchen renovations. ($15,000, in fact.)

So why the high price? Well, a shortage of materials and labour has equated to a rise in the cost of renovating. Paired with that is the now hugely trendy focus of turning kitchens into a ‘command centre’ for the home, where work, meals, play and dining are all carried out.

Transformed bathrooms

Next on the list is bathrooms, with people looking to use their bathrooms as personal sanctuaries. There was a big surge in homeowners remodelling by tearing everything out and starting from scratch, which is now still popular as trades return to work.

Additionally, old bathtubs are being replaced with “power tubs,” which have a stronger drain and allow the tub to be removed and replaced with a “jet tub,” or even a “whirlpool” feature.

Open-plan living declines

As homes needed to become more open and energy-efficient, homeowners also realised that they needed more personal space – whether to get work done, home school during lockdown or just get some respite. So we’re currently seeing rooms going back to more separated areas, rather than the hugely popular open-plan trend that’s dominated over the last few years.

Preparing for summer

There’s no surprise that homeowners looked to enjoy the end of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, keeping summer in their keen sights. And now that the warmer weather is finally here, property owners are enjoying renovating their outdoor space and adding value add-ons like outdoor roller blinds, patios and other lifestyle-focused features.

The home office takeover

It wouldn’t a very good list of top renovation trends for 2021 without home offices getting a mention. Nearing the top of the most common projects, average spending on work-related resources for the home surged. Meanwhile, the ‘smart home’ trend really dominated, with more people investing in nifty technology to make work-life at home more inspiring and convenient.

How many of these trends did you take up? It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon.
